Five Shapes Project ‘Out of the Blue.’ by Vik Lai
This project is about using five shapes to create 2D and 3D compositions. My theme is ‘Out of the Blue’. It is hard to stay 7800 miles away from my home city. When I picked up the phone call of bad news from my home city out of the blue, I knew my beloved ones needed me to be there. There was always six-step of my roller-coaster-like feeling expressed in acronyms, etc. WYA? FOMO, YOLO, FOBO, SOB and BRB ASAP.
WYA- Where you are
FOMO- Fear of missing out
YOLO- You Only Live Once
FOBO-Fear of Better Options
SOB is SOB
BRB ASP – Be Right Back As Soon As Possible
FOMO 3D
This feeling needs a quality of honesty. I created this mountain-like heavy volume form and used the 2D composition as the section in the 3D form, and craved out the shapes directly. A polygonal shape (Rhombicuboctahedron) is lifting the heavy mass underneath, which is like somebody can lift a car to save their kid suddenly. In the core, it’s a dichotomous shape, one end is a dark square, and the end is a circle at the back.
FOBO 3D
The base plane of FOBO is a hyperbolic paraboloid which creates an uneasy dichotomous space. A wooden polygonal shape (Rhombicuboctahedron) is used in the transformation of the circle to 3D. The arrangement of the shapes is decomposed by following the shapes’ behaviour on the dichotomous spaces.
